Apple Removes Fake Crypto Wallet App That Steals $9,5M


A fake app for , designed to mislead users, managed to bypass Apple’s review processes and cost users up to $9,5 million in cryptocurrency. This news highlights the responses and responsibilities that technology companies have for the security of their users.


According to his report CoinDesk, the fake version of the Ledger Live crypto wallet app for macOS managed to trick citizens into accessing their wallets. From April 7 to 13, over 50 users came into contact with the fake app and ended up losing significant amounts of cryptocurrency.

It is important to mention that the legitimate Ledger app is distributed exclusively through the company’s website and not through the Mac App Store. Notably, the authentic app does not ask users to enter critical information such as seed phrases, unlike the fake app, which used deception strategies to convince users to provide this sensitive information.

The stolen information was routed through the cryptocurrency exchange KuCoin, where hackers used a service known as AudiA6 to launder cryptocurrency, charging high transaction fees. Three of the victims of the scam reported losing seven-figure sums, which is extremely concerning in app fraud cases.

Apple removed the fake app from the Mac App Store after discovering the scam, but it remained available for about two weeks, raising questions about the effectiveness of its app review process.
