Matt Murdock — Daredevil! — returns for season 2 of “Daredevil: Born Again” on March 24, but this time he’s sporting a new look… a costume that the show’s producers are calling the “blackout” suit. It’s a one-off look for the “Man Without Fear,” featuring an all-black version of his familiar armored suit… but, perhaps most importantly for fans (and for the show’s star, Charlie Cox), it finally includes the MCU version of the hero with the iconic “DD” logo on his chest.
“Obviously, I’ve hinted over the years that I would love to ‘graduate’ to DDs on the chest plate,” Cox told me recently. “My uniform is interesting because there’s this thing about it being so cool and it’s such a joy and an honor to wear it, and then there’s this thing about it making you feel good. So I pull in two different directions. There was a day on set in Season 2… where I was wearing the uniform and it was late at night. I had eaten way too much at dinner. I was putting myself in that thing and I felt awful and I was probably pretty grumpy about it. And then I came out and there were a lot of fans, and I could literally hear the gasps of surprise at the sight of the black uniform with the DDs. And suddenly I remembered, ‘Oh, this is so cool!'”

How Daredevil's "Blackout" Suit Came About
Executive producer Sana Amanat explained that the blackout outfit came about when the production team realized they could simply spray paint the old red outfit black, but use stencils for the DDs so they would stay red.
“And that’s how we’re going to get the DDs out of her,” he says. “And we’re really excited about the way it all came together.”
There's also a story-driven reason for the costume change, of course. Season 1 of "Born Again" ended with Matt and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) on the run after Mayor Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) bans vigilantes. Daredevil is now among the most wanted.
"OR life "They're literally squatting over a restaurant. They only come out at night. That's how dangerous New York City has become for the Punishers, and for Matt Murdock in particular. So he painted his black suit black. That's why. But over the course of the season... as more action takes place, the black starts to fade and the red comes out from underneath. It's such a great idea."

The first Daredevil costume that's unique to the MCU
According to showrunner and executive producer Dario Scardapane, even though we don't see the transformation from the old red suit to the new blackout suit, we can imagine how it all came about – and how it ties into Matt's unique relationship with Vincent D'Onofrio's Mayor Wilson Fisk/Kingpin.
“It’s almost like a scene that never made it to the screen, with Murdock spray-painting the suit black because he has to be in the shadows before the things that happen in the first episode,” he says. “But leaving the DDs because he wants Fisk to know who he is. And once we had that image in our heads, then [it goes to the visual development team]. I think [Sana Amanat] said, ‘The spray starts to wear off after every fight.’”
So, ultimately, the suit will be a unique combination of battle-worn black and red. D'Onofrio, who has his own costume choices on the show as Fisk, is also excited about the DDs and the new look: "He also does this thing where he creates a suit that no one has ever seen before."
As Cox says: “Every other costume [we’ve done] has been in the comics, except for this one which is the first one that’s unique to our own series.”
#DaredevilBornAgain Season 2 is a brutal, relentless tour-de-force, and a Marvel masterstroke that allows Charlie Cox, @WilsonBethel, @vincentdonofrio, and the entire cast to shine. Bullseye gets a costume faithful to the comics
Wilson Bethel also returns in the new season as “Dex” Poindexter, aka Bullseye. His alliances have changed over the years, and so have his costume choices. At one point, he even dressed as a “copycat” Daredevil! But now he has a new costume in season 2, and it’s a pretty faithful version of the comics.
“Bullseye continues to evolve both as a character and in the way he is represented in his guise,” says Scardapane. “For Bullseye, going from being a legitimate agent of FBI "He went from being a murderer to a criminal to other things, it was important. I don't want to give too much away, but he feels like he's on a mission for good this season. He thinks so himself... For Bullseye's costume, a lot of thought went into it."
Amanat adds that actors are always involved in the costuming and design process that goes into creating their characters. “They live these characters longer than we do,” she says.
In fact, Wilson Bethel already has ideas about what he wants to look like in season 3, which has just begun production. “He texted us a picture and said, ‘This is my wish list,’” Scardapane laughs. Amanat adds with a laugh, “Yeah, ‘These are the things I want.’ We said yes to some of them!”
